WHY AN IMPACTED WISDOM TOOTH SHOULD NOT BE IGNORED

Wisdom teeth sometimes have trouble erupting properly because they are the last ones to come through, and sometimes the other teeth don’t leave enough room. This may cause impaction, which should not be left untreated as it can result in tooth decay, gum disease, and creating problems for your other teeth. Our dentists, Dr. Glenn Ong-Veloso and Dr. Joy Helou provide wisdom teeth removal for our patients in Apple Valley, California.

If a tooth is impacted it may display the following signs:

  • Headache
  • Swelling or aching in the jaw
  • Bad breath
  • An unpleasant taste in the mouth when you eat
  • Gums that are bleeding and swollen

If you currently have a combination of these signs, you will likely need to seek treatment for the impacted tooth. Your dentist will examine your smile to determine if the tooth needs to be extracted. If your dentist finds that the tooth is stuck in the bone, the tooth will be removed in sections after making incisions in the gums. The tooth is typically removed this way to minimize removal of bone material.

There are times when an impacted tooth won’t show symptoms, and that is why your routine six-month dental checkups are so vital, as they can spot the issue with the help of dental X-rays.
