Most people at some point in their lives have experienced dry mouth. It often happens under conditions of stress or fear, and on those occasions the problem will go away on it own. Chronic dry mouth however, needs to be addressed.

Saliva is extremely important. It keeps your mouth hydrated, but it is also a key part of breaking down your food to make it easier to chew, swallow and digest. It also neutralizes the bacteria in your mouth that can lead to tooth decay and infections, and it carries trace amounts of fluoride that help to strengthen your tooth enamel

Dry mouth can be caused by any number of things. Certain medications can create the condition, as can diseases such as Parkinson’s Hodgkins, and HIV/AIDS. A dry mouth can be the result of menopause, and smoking can contribute to the problem.

If your mouth feels dry, sticky, or you have cracked lips or bad breath, you should make an appointment to talk with our dentist, Dr. Glenn Ong-Veloso. In addition to giving you an exam, the dentist will also want to know about any medications or supplements that you are taking, and any diseases or illnesses with which you have been diagnosed. The dentist may want to consult with your primary physician about changing a course of treatment.

Treating dry mouth may be as simple as drinking more water, or reducing or eliminating your use of caffeinated drinks, tobacco or alcohol. Sugarless gum or hard candy can stimulate the production of saliva or your dentist may give you a prescription for artificial saliva.
